Experimental Sand Casting

Join us at CSSJ for an experimental sand casting workshop where we’ll introduce you to one of the most ancient forms of casting with a modern twist.

Sand-casting is a simple, fun introduction to casting and an excellent way to reuse scrap silver from previous projects. In the first half of the class, we’ll explore which shapes will work best with sand-casting and look at how we can cast a stone in place.

We’ll spend some time building moulds incorporating your choice of cubic zirconia or sea glass, and learn how to calculate silver weights to guarantee the perfect pour every time. Then, while you enjoy your lunch break, your experienced tutor will safely conduct all the molten metal pours. In the afternoon, we’ll learn how to remove ‘sprues’ and tidy up your cast silver pieces to a high-quality finish. Finally, you will learn how to attach findings to your casting and leave with a unique pendant!
