It was a year of global upheaval, economic transformation and intellectual brilliance. Not only did it witness American Independence but also the flowering of the Scottish Enlightenment.On 4 July 1776, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, declared "that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent States." What began as a regional rebellion had turned into a revolution.Three months after the signing of the American Declaration of Independence, on the 1st October 1776, the Trustees of the Leighton Library in the small village of Dunblane ordered nine new books to be purchased "with all convenient speed".This exhibition brings together eight of these surviving texts, alongside a set of maps from the American Atlas. This atlas was the most upto date record of America and the British colonies on the eve of the American Revolution.This free exhibition will run throughout the month of July across two sites - The Leighton Library and Dunblane Museum. The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday 3 July in Dunblane’s Cathedral Hall. The opening event will consist of refreshments and a series of short talks by Kathryn Porter (US Consul General), Lord George Robertson (Patron of the Leighton Library), and Dr Josh Smith (University of Stirling). Guests will then have the opportunity to browse the exhibition and visit the Leighton Library which will remain open until 9pm.Space is limited for this free event, so book early!
