- **Event Description**: ANNOUNCEMENT: Timothy Echavez Salaver will be producing "Echoes of You" Concert at Silliman University Luce Auditorium on Sunday, January 18, 2026, 7pm.  Performing will be the San Francisco Bay Chorale conducted by Dr. Mark Sumner and Timothy Echavez Salaver plus the Silliman University Campus Choristers and Silliman University Concert Band directed by Dr. Elizabeth Susan Suarez.  Special Guest Artist will be Alexandra Bernas.

Calling all Echavez and Macute family to attend this concert.  During this concert there will a world premiere of two songs by Timothy Echavez Salaver as well as a dedication to Estrella Macute Echavez (1920-1999), SU Alumna 1938-1942, 1948, 1949.

The song Echoes of You will be performed by the combined choirs and conducted by Timothy Echavez Salaver to commemorate Estrella's dedication to education, learning and teaching whose roots began at Silliman University.  

Estrella Echavez began her college career at Silliman University as a shy, naive 17-year-old.  Throughout her college years, she suffered from homesickness, illness, and fatigue.  But despite those challenges, she persevered until January 1942 when the Japanese invaded Dumaguete and she was forced to evacuate from the campus with the University President, Dr. Arthur Carson, and his wife, and Dr. Santiago Calo and his wife, (Estrella's aunt) Maria de la Paz Macute.

When she finally made her way home to Dipolog, she found that the Japanese had taken her family home of Isabelo Echavez and Manuela Macute as their headquarters and her family had escaped to the mountains.  Estrella did not join her family in the mountains, but stayed in Dipolog to support the Underground Philippine Guerillas fighting the Japanese.  From 1942-1945, Estrella provided much needed support as the war raged on.  

Eventually in early 1945, the United States forces joined the Philippine forces in Dipolog and took over the airfield.  Dr. (and now First Lieutenant) Santiago Calo now the Chief Medical Officer introduced 3rd Lieutenant Alvin Gubisch to Estrella and they were married in Dapitan in March 1945.  The war ended on September 3, 1945, and Patrick Jay Gubisch (later Salaver) was born December 20, 1945.    

Estrella had another child Dotti Anne in July 1947.  In spring 1948, Estrella returned to Silliman University to complete her B.S. Degree in Education.  Daughter Edna Claire (Now Vidda Chan) was born August 1948.  In Summer 1949, Estrella returned to Silliman University for graduate courses in teaching.  She returned to Dipolog to teach at the Bonifacio Institute and then taught at West Negros College in Bacolod.

On July 4, 1948, Estrella was recognized by the Philippine government for her support of the war.  She was also recognized in her new home of San Francisco, California, in January 1969 for her support of the underground guerillas.
