Then There Was You is a powerful indie film written by Shanti Nelson and Adewale Bajere. It screened as "Opening Day Film", at the 2017 San Diego Black Film Festival, where it took home four awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress. In this love story told through the art of music and poetry, ladies man, Kingston, gets more than he bargains for when he encounters Shandre, a beautiful spoken word artist, while on a date at the jazz/poetry lounge that she owns. As fate would have it, Kingston meets Shandre while on a blind double date with his brother. Much to Kingston’s surprise, the date takes an unexpected turn when Shandre abruptly leaves, leading Kingston and his ego on a mission to win her over. She reluctantly accepts Kingston’s advances as he reveals another side of him.
During their newfound romance, Kingston develops a high regard for his heritage as Shandre introduces him to a lifestyle deeply rooted in African American culture. He also finds himself falling head over heels for the first time; but when the past resurfaces, Kingston and Shandre are forced to rethink their burgeoning romance. After a realization, Kingston sets out on a quest to regain Shandre’s heart; but his plans are threatened with a shocking discovery that will change him forever.
