- **Event Name**: Storytime with Jonathan Thunder - Blue Bearies!
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 12 Sep, 2026 at 11:00 am
- **Event Description**: Join us for a very special story time with award-winning illustrator and artist Jonathan Thunder on Saturday, September 12th at 11 AM. Jonathan will read his new children’s book Blue Bearies that he illustrated. It is written by Brenda J. Child and translated by Gordon Jourdain. He will also answer audience questions about his process and work. All ages are welcome. Books will be available for purchase and Jonathan will personally autograph them for yourself or your favorite humans.
In Blue Bearies Brenda J. Child (Bíne) reprises the adventures of Windy Girl and her dog Itchy Boy with a focus on history and ecology, while Jonathan Thunder’s lively illustrations teem with playful humor. Anishinaabe educator Gordon Jourdain retells the story in Ojibwemowin. This much-anticipated sequel to the award-winning Bowwow Powwow celebrates the wonders of a time when, as Mrs. Mukwa shares, “we lived closely with our animal relatives”—to our mutual benefit.
“Bears are our teachers!” exclaims Mrs. Mukwa at the end of a field trip with Windy Girl’s class. Indeed, beyond an intertwined history that includes a woman “as fierce as a bear” during a long-ago battle and a cub that traveled on the shoulders of an Ojibwe man, these animal relatives have much to teach us. Stop by stop, the students learn about habitats and habits, landscapes and lore—the assorted ways that bears seek out the gifts of their environment. Windy Girl and her classmates marvel as they witness bears digging medicinal herbs, munching on berries, and playing with their families.
Jonathan Thunder is an award-winning, visual storyteller. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts - Studio Arts Program in Santa Fe and received a B.A. in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics from the Art Institute International in Minneapolis. Not only did he paint the spectacular mural on the side of the Zenith Bookstore building in West Duluth, his epic animated mural Manifest’o was installed in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 2021 - 2023. Thunder has received numerous awards and fellowships. His work has been included in various one-person, two-person, and group exhibitions at many galleries and art institutes. Jonathan Thunder: Good Mythology premiered on PBS American Masters in 2023.
