There they were, the night before Halloween, and once again they found themselves staring down from the precipice. A path diverged before them, and the choice was as gray and opaque as the fog that had set in over the lake; which also seemed to sit quietly in the background, awaiting their decision.
Should they flip *this* switch? Could they pull *this* lever? They knew full well that if *this* bell was rung, there could be no unringing, and there was no sound known to human ears that could drown it out if things went wrong.
As obscure as the outcome was, the time was coming to decide. This choice, decades in the making, was now only 2 hours away. The alignment was almost here, and there would not be another opportunity like this in their lifetime. They knew full-well the countless days, countless years, that they had spent preparing, and yet, they still weren't ready. They needed more time to consider, they needed more time to weigh the options, they needed to clear their mind. They needed a walk.
So walk they did. Down their usual path, across their usual street. Even in the thick fog, they knew every crack in this pavement, and the familiarity was calming. The only thing seemingly different on tonight's walk was a whisper in the distance that was becoming more pronounced as they walked in its direction. What was that sound? How interesting. As it came into focus, it was as lovely as it was intriguing. They kept moving towards it, and as they did the light from the Open sign hanging in the window of Wussow's Concert Cafe illuminated the mist. The minutes were precious and few now, however, there was a little time to listen in, so they decided to take a peek inside.
Once they made their way in, the found themselves surrounded by people in strange costumes, music was coming from the stage, the smell of warm tea, and delicious food filled the air. What was this celebration? People were talking science, people were tapping their feet. It was unusual, but AMAZING, and there was even an open seat near their favorite painting, so they got a drink and sat down. Songs gave way to conversation, and conversation in turn to song, it was lovely. This mix of music and science and revelry was exactly what they needed, so they took it all in.
As minutes turned to hours, they couldn't remember the last time they had such a wonderful evening. As the event came to a close they paid their tab, and started making their way back home. And then it hit them. The CHOICE! The ALIGNMENT!! It had passed!!! The time had come and gone while they sipped tea and discussed ideas and listened to music. It had come and gone while they made new friends and voted for their favorite costumes. It had come and gone while they attended the 3rd ever MAD Science Music Mash hosted by Cafe ScientifEEK Twin Ports and Wussow's concert cafe. The time had come and gone... and rising equally with this realization was another one. The realization that it had come and gone, and honestly, they didn't mind at all.
