Ahoy me hearties!
Here’s a call you don’t see every day.
There’s a shanty crew forming up at Duluth Folk School. The chantyman has been at it a while and has some ideas and a whole pile of songs in his head. That’s where you come in!
Every musical group is made up of the voices of each individual performer. The structure of this group has traditionally been very open to all ages, genders, voices and ability levels. There are no plans to change that. The goal is to hear from everyone who shows up to this first few sessions what we all want the group to sound like. Blessed are those who show up, for their voices shall be heard!
A more clearly defined goal is that to attain critical mass and sustainability, we need a minimum of 10 committed singers who show up regularly. We need Bass, Baritone, Alto and Soprano. We also need people who just want to sing melody in unison. You don’t need to read music. You don’t need to be classically trained. You really don’t need to sound professional. Our reward for having those committed folks is the help and support of a professional director. He is far more skilled and experienced than the average shanty man.
Which brings to mind some of the other choices we need to make early on. The original version of this group formed in a parking lot during Covid. We never planned to perform in public, although technically, we always did. It was always just for us. There were members of the group who wanted to sing for audiences, but they never were a majority.
We can decide what this incarnation does with our music. We can decide if we want sponsors. We can decide how far we want to develop our sound. We can decide if we want to have a performance crew and a crew that stays aboard. Maybe we can even go on folk music field trips.
If you love this old school music, this is your chance to do something about it! We meet at Duluth Folk School, 3:00, Sunday, November the 16th for one hour. This is your chance to help build and be part of the musical group you always wanted.
