Free Pet Microchip Clinic
We're partnering with Animal Allies to host a FREE pet microchip clinic right here at Ursa Minor! They'll be here from 2:00-4:00pm on Saturday, July 24th. Not sure what microchipping is all about? Check out the information below!
A microchip is a small cylindrical device that is placed underneath the skin of your pet. It is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted via a syringe. Each microchip has a unique code that emits a radio frequency. A microchip scanner is able to identify certain radio frequencies, which is how they can “read” the code of the microchip. That microchip number is stored in a database of the microchip company. This number is attached to the owner's contact information, which is used to reunite owners and pets.
A microchip is not a tracking device. The only purpose a microchip serves is to store information. Microchips should be a secondary identification to collar tags in case your pet goes missing. Microchips are only effective if the owner keeps the information up to date via the microchip company.
Microchips are very helpful for identification purposes if your pet gets lost and also loses their collar. Animals that are microchipped are reclaimed at a much higher rate. Dogs without microchips are reclaimed 21.9% of the time, whereas microchipped dogs are reclaimed at a rate of 52.2%. The statistics for cats is even more significant. A non-microchipped cat is only reclaimed at a rate of 1.8%, versus 38.5% for a cat with a microchip.
