About the event

Anne-Marie Erickson for In the Evening, We'll Dance
Please join us on Thursday, September 25th at 7 PM as we have a heartfelt discussion with northern Minnesota author Anne-Marie Erickson. Anne-Marie will be in conversation with Duluth author Felicia Schneiderhan. They will talk about her new book, In the Evening, We’ll Dance: A Memoir in Essays on Love & Dementia (Holy Cow! Press) and how Anne-Marie’s loving and committed marriage survived the effects of dementia. Come with your honest questions as we talk about a topic that can happen to any of us. Anne-Marie will be signing her books at the event.

In the Evening, We’ll Dance is a deeply personal and daringly original memoir in essays. Anne-Marie Erickson honors her late husband, Richard (Dick) Cain. Dick first showed signs of short-term memory loss in 1998; he was in the late stages of dementia when he died, in 2015. “The title of each essay is a direct quotation of something Dick either said or wrote during the 17 years of his dementia,” she notes. “As such, I think of him as my co-author.” Through her essays, Anne-Marie provides a unique perspective on a significant public health issue. Most people have been touched by dementia, whether it’s a neighbor, a parent, a friend, or a spouse. She hopes to “give voice to those living with dementia and to encourage others to share their insights into the profound love and loss, grief and frustration - as well as the joys - that constitute this all-too-common experience.” In the Evening, We’ll Dance is a compelling memoir that affirms ongoing selfhood and enduring love in the face of dementia.

Anne-Marie Erickson was born in the western Minnesota prairie town of Benson, the granddaughter of Norwegian immigrants. She attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where she earned a B.A. in American Studies. Following a move to northern Minnesota, she received a M.A. in English from Bemidji State University. For many years, she was a freelance writer. Her journalism, poetry, essays, and book reviews have appeared in regional publications; this is her first book. She taught English at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and Mangold Institute, in Madrid, Spain. She currently writes, reads, gardens, and enjoys the lakes, walking paths, music, and visual arts available in Grand Rapids.

Felicia Schneiderhan is a writer, editor, and teacher based in Duluth, Minnesota. Her magazine articles have appeared widely, and her fiction and nonfiction can be read in many literary journals. Her memoir Newlyweds Afloat details the years she and her husband Mark lived on a boat in Downtown Chicago.

Anne-Marie Erickson is a fiscal year 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
