- **Event Description**: Please join Zenith Bookstore on Thursday, September 17th at the St. Louis County Depot – Great Hall as we welcome Former Minnesota Governor and Senator, Mark Dayton. Mark will be joined by his dear friend and former Senior Advisor, John Ongaro. We’ll begin this special evening with cocktails (including non-alcoholic) and conversation at 6 PM. All proceeds will go to the North Shore Scenic Railroad who will be serving. At 7 PM we’ll shift into our fascinating program. Mark and John will discuss Mark’s new memoir, Perseverance (MN Historical Society Press). They will talk about being a Dayton’s Department Store heir, his senate and governorship, and other parts of his life. Mark will take questions from the audience. Afterwards, he’ll personally autograph his memoir for guests. This is a FREE event brought to you by Zenith Bookstore and the St. Louis County Depot. Drinks and Mark’s book will be available for purchase. You may also pre-order Perseverance on our website or at the bookstore.  
 
Perseverance is an entertaining, insightful, and revealing account of a man born into social prominence who dedicated his life to public service. It provides a candid look behind the curtain at contemporary politics in the state and the nation. Mark Dayton is the descendent of a legendary department store family, He could have chosen any profession. He grew up in an environment of business savvy and social generosity, inspired by the belief that great privilege demands social responsibility and community commitment—a belief that led him to a life in public service.
 
In his own words, Perseverance details Dayton’s life story, including his childhood in a dysfunctional household, his political awakening, his early life in politics, and his friendship with Senator Paul Wellstone, whose call, “We all do better when we all do better,” served as a lodestar for Dayton’s ongoing work. Readers follow Dayton from his first elected state office to his time in the US Senate, to his two terms as Minnesota’s governor. As pointed in assessments of himself as in those of his colleagues, Dayton discusses mistakes as well as achievements. He gives credit where it is due, regardless of political affiliations. The book ends with a postscript on our current moment in public life. In addition to providing an enduring record of recent political history, Dayton’s memoir offers case studies of problems being remedied swiftly under leadership motivated by empathy. Perseverance provides occasion for conversations of consequence and substance, today and for years to come.
 
Mark Dayton served two terms as the fortieth governor of Minnesota, from 2011 to 2019. His other elected offices include state auditor and US senator. Dayton lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.
 
John Ongaro worked with Mark Dayton on his U.S. Senate Campaign and was the 8th Congressional District Coordinator. He has served as the Director of Intergovernmental Relations for St. Louis County for nearly 40 years and retired from the county in 2024. He is currently the Director of the Northern Counties Coalition. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota.
