The Free-Writing Intensive is designed to liberate writers from habitual patterns and blockages, unlocking power and productivity. It does this through opening the vault to the theory and practice of an essential skill that is seldom, if ever, taught: how we fill a blank page. Participants in this workshop are often stunned and surprised by what comes out of their pens. “I was quite taken, moved, and frequently overwhelmed by the whole experience,” said one participant. “It’s messy. It’s intense. It’s difficult. But it’s the truest writing I’ve ever done. And it made me feel alive,” said another. This workshop, perfect for all genres and levels, has for years been taught at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival—now, writers in Dubuque can take it for a fraction of that price. 

Following the workshop, there will be a "Rooftop Poetry Reading” with Diana Goetsch at the Smokestack PM located at 62 E 7th Street Dubuque at 7 PM. 

Novelist Diana Goetsch (www.dianagoetsch.com) has written eight poetry collections, and has published extensively as a nonfiction writer and columnist. Her work has appeared in leading magazines, newspapers and anthologies including The New Yorker, Poetry, Gettysburg Review, The Iowa Review, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The American Scholar, Best American Poetry and The Pushcart Prize. She is a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts and The New School, where she was the Grace Paley Teaching Fellow. She is an experienced dynamic teacher of writing, having taught in M.F.A. programs, public schools, prisons, living rooms and, for 18 years, the Iowa Summer Writing Festival.
