About the Film
At 18 years old, John left the rural upper Midwest for a metropolitan area he had never been to before, leaving behind his roots in gardening and food growing. Over three decades later, inspired by his ancestors and challenging local norms, he removed all turf grass from his urban backyard and planted a food garden.

Through this journey, John measures the social, environmental and economic benefits of urban food gardens, uncovering how vital these spaces were to past generations—and how they can help address some of today’s greatest challenges.

The movie will be screened at the Convivium Urban Farmstead, 2811 Jackson St, Dubuque, IA 52001. The event will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026 from 3:45-6:00 PM. Tickets are available on a siding scale pricing structure. 100% of ticket sales go to support Convivium.
