The Seed Keeper, a 2021 fictional novel by indigenous author, Diane Wilson, weaves together the voices of four resilient women spanning several generations within a Dakhóta family. The novel’s protagonist, Rosalie Iron Wing, grows up spending time in the woods with her father, Ray, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants, the stars, and the origins of the Dakhóta people. After her father suddenly disappears, Rosalie’s life changes forever. She is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato, where she meets the rebellious Gaby Makespeace and they bond over their shared legacies of trauma.

Over the years, Rosalie must navigate her grief as she also grapples with the past. She learns to take courage and comfort in the legacy of the women who have come before her, who have protected their families, traditions and seeds throughout generations of hardship, war, and the trauma of boarding schools.

The Seed Keeper is a beautifully told story of reawakening, of remembering our original relationship to the seeds and to our ancestors.
