Valentine's Day at the IFI: Bound, Weekend & A Love Divided
Celebrate Valentine's Day 2018 at the IFI with three distinct doses of romance from some of the most vital filmmakers around.
Bound: The first feature from Lana and Lilly Wachowski is the noir-inflected story of Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and lover Corky (Gina Gershon), who hatch a plan to rob $2 million from the
former’s boyfriend, Mafia money launderer Caesar (Joe Pantoliano). On its release, Bound received praise not just for its undoubted style, but also for its credible portrayal of gay female characters.
Weekend: Russell and Glen hook up on a Friday night. Russell is looking for love, but Glen has recently had his heart broken.
Over the course of the weekend, despite their difficulties and differences, as well as other obstacles, the two become closer, reaching a level of emotional as well as physical intimacy in Andrew Haigh’s tender and touching debut.
A Love Divided: This Valentine’s Day offering tells the dramatic story of the marriage between Seán Cloney, a Catholic, and his wife Sheila, a Protestant, in 1950’s Ireland. The two vow to commit to each other above all else, but when Sheila refuses to send her children to the local Catholic school their love is put under impossible pressure as they both become unwitting pawns in an ecclesiastical power struggle which results in bitter sectarian conflict within the local community.
Based on the story that unfolded in the Wexford town of Fethard-On-Sea in 1957, Sydney Macartney’s feature is a gripping version of events with striking central performances from Liam Cunningham and Orla Brady.
Actor Orla Brady will attend this screening.
