Vótáil100: Women’s Rights as Human Rights

a public lecture by Ivana Bacik, Barrister and Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin

In this talk, I will explore the question of women’s rights in Ireland, and the way in which change in Irish society, particularly in recent decades, has led to changes in women’s identities. I will discuss the text of the 1937 Constitution and the effect of referendums in recent years, and explore the impact of the introduction of gender quota laws,  and will conclude with a review of our Oireachtas Vótáil 100 programme being run over 2018 to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage in Ireland and the election of the first woman MP/TD in December 1918, Constance Markievicz.

Ivana Bacik is a barrister and Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin. She is a Senator for Dublin University (elected 2007, re-elected 2011 and again 2016). Her research interests include criminal law; criminology; feminist theory of law and equality law. She co-authored a major study on gender in the legal professions (Bacik, Costello and Drew, Gender In Justice, 2003), and her other publications include Legal Cases that Changed Ireland (co-edited with Mary Rogan, Clarus Press, 2016). She is Chairperson of the Oireachtas Vótáil 100 Committee organising a programme of events in 2018 to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage in Ireland.
