- **Event Name**: Kerry Guinan General Election Press Conference
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 15 Feb, 2016 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Artist Kerry Guinan is standing as an Independent for Dublin Central in the Irish General Election 2016 on the promise of liberating art from class. You are invited to a public press conference on February 15th to discuss her following programmes for the State:

- Abolish educational barriers to art work by implementing free State art training programs for all ages. Uphold the value of art education and criticism in our public domain.

- Increase State art capital by introducing progressive taxation on art workers, ending the dominance of the materially privileged in art and redistributing their wealth to the currently exploited classes.

- Assume complete State responsibility for the provision of art facilities. The current State’s agenda of promoting speculation and privatisation over creative participation in our public space has led to the closure of almost 50% of Dublin artist studios in the last three years.

- Enable and encourage total access to art work by introducing an Art-Producing Welfare Allowance (A.P.W.A.) solely allocated by financial means testing with quota systems for genders, sexes, sexualities, abilities, races and nationalities.

- Dissolve public art institutions that produce class, such as the Arts Council, Culture Ireland, the Institute of Art and Design and the National College of Art and Design.

"Our society is suppressed by a classist art structure that values certain forms of culture above others. This value system is reinforced by restrictive entry demands to art work. To be an art worker you must have access to third level education. You must have financial security for income instability, with 64% of artists in Ireland living on less than €10,000 a year. As an art worker you are an exploited class, expected to professionalize your creative work without any financial rewards for your professional status. You must be self-endorsing, socially mobile, competitive and and well networked. The State generates these standards in its art funding processes, which pit art workers against each other in time-consuming low-success-rate bureaucratic competitions for sparse amounts of capital. The professionalization of art work depoliticises art by forcing art workers to appeal to classist standards of taste, and depoliticises society by producing class segregation."
