Introduction to 3D modeling with Blender // A 3 evening course with Liing Heaney // starts Thursday, February 14th // 19:00 - 21:00
Blender is a free, open-source 3D modeling program for everyone that allows you to model, animate, simulate & render still images, animations, visual effects and video games. You can use it to create a range of different environments, objects and characters. When you learn the basics of Blender, you will be able to apply this knowledge in animation, video game engines and VR.
Over 3 weeks, we will explore the Blender interface, building models of animals, trees, & grass as well as using cloth simulations to create a dynamic environment. We will also look at colouring your models, using particle systems, and rendering your scene. At the end of this course, you will have created your own computer generated environment
What you’ll need:
A laptop with internet access
A 3-button mouse

Week 1 – Introduction/Basic Modeling- Familiarising with the Blender interface- Importing images to work with- Set up basic landscape scene- Setting up a camera view- Modeling smaller objects (grass, rocks, clouds, trees etc.)- Introducing Metaball modelling- Begin modeling an animal
Week 2 – Colouring Models- Exploring different ways of adding colour to models – Procedural vsImage Texturing- Using nodes to produce effects like colour variations in multiple objects &glowing objects- Adding World Lighting- Grouping/setting up objects for next week
Week 3 – Particles & Displacement Animation- Using both Hair and Particle Emitters to create random dispersion ofobjects (eg. Grass and rocks)- Creating vertex groups to control emitters- Animating displacement maps for simple movement in objects- Re-tweaking models & textures- Composition- Set up for render
