Dublin - Spirit & Skills of Motivational Interviewing (2 Days)
Motivational Interviewing is a model used to support people through change. It helps to strengthen their commitment to change, by drawing out the person’s own motivation to change. This is used extensively in healthcare environments, particularly in relation to health behaviours such as self-management and addiction. It is also used in educational environments and in business and so is a very flexible approach to change.
This first day of the workshop will outline the basic concepts and principles of Motivational Interviewing, including an opportunity to discuss how they may apply in your own work, and a space to practice some of the core skills. There will be a focus on dealing with resistance and evoking change talk to improve a person's intrinsic motivation for change. The second day will give the opportunity to practice skills relating to the four processes in MI and will enable participants to practice combing the component skills within a longer applied session with feedback.
This workshop will be useful to those working in education, health, addiction studies, social care or counselling. As well as being facilitated by Gillian Martin, of Soiléir, this course has the added bonus of being co-facilitated by Matthew Spicer from Tasmania, Australia. Matthew is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and has great experience in using and training Motivational Interviewing particularly in the context of health behaviour change, utilising Positive Behaviour Support, and supporting children who have experienced trauma.
Tea, Coffee and snacks will be provided during the day. Lunch is not provided, but there is a large selection of shops, cafes, delis and other lunch options in the area. Participants will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.
An optional session will be held after the main workshop on day two specifically for Behaviour Analysts who wish to discuss how the content of the day may apply to their behaviour analytic work. This workshop is an Approved Continuing Education Unit from the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board and eligible participants will be awarded One Type II CEU.
