On the one hand, we have Freud's interpretation in "Inhibitions, Symptom and Anxiety", where he tries to define the concept of anxiety as a main element in neurosis and, on the other, Heidegger's concept, which plays a major role in gaining the existential meaning of Dasein, literally translated as 'being-there'. Despite this difference, many scholars have postulated a common anthropo-existential interpretation.Anxiety as such marks the anthropological and existential passage from the non-distinction of the pre-subjective life to the distinction that emanates from the differentiation of the subject from the world. Originally trained in engineering, she left that field after recognising a deeper intellectual and personal commitment to understanding the limits of human endurance and psychic suffering. She subsequently completed a bachelor’s degree in counselling at Allameh Tabataba’i University and a master’s degree at the University of Tehran.Alongside her university education, Fatemeh recognised that psychoanalytic formation extends beyond academic training. She therefore joined the Iranian Psychoanalytic Center, where she began her clinical practice under supervision, developing an appreciation of psychoanalysis as both a clinical and ethical endeavour.A defining moment in her formation occurred on 13 June 2025, when military attacks on Iran resulted in the destruction of her psychoanalytic office in Tehran. Confronted with the realities of war, she experienced first-hand the collapse of the familiar distinction between analyst and analysand. As both therapists and patients endured the same external threat, traditional notions of the analyst as a “blank slate” gave way to an encounter with the disruptive force of the Real. This experience profoundly reshaped her understanding of anxiety, suffering, and the scope of psychoanalytic practice, ultimately directing her toward psycho-social research.More recently, she presented her paper, Democracy and the Crisis of Trust in the Post-Truth Era: A Psycho-Social Study, at St Mary’s University, London, exploring the complex relationship between psychic life and contemporary political realities.Her current research project, The Architecture of Anxiety: From Accumulated Authority in Iran to Liquid Modernity in Ireland, examines the production of anxiety across contrasting social contexts while considering the possibilities for human agency amid political and cultural uncertainty. Through both clinical experience and academic research, Fatemeh’s work seeks to illuminate the dynamic interplay between the inner world and the social conditions that shape it.Michael CookeDr Michael Cooke is Assistant Professor in Applied Psychology at the Department of Psychology, Maynooth University since his appointment in 2018, serving as Head of Department from 2021 – 2024.
