The Other Side Of Tender

The Other Side of Tender is an evening dedicated to film, art, and open conversation. Centered on the Malaysian film Maryam Pagi ke Malam, the event explores themes of womanhood, resilience, and the social structures that shape our lives.

Alongside the film screening, a mini art exhibition will feature works from Malaysian women artists, each presenting a single artwork that represents their narrative of being a woman. To further support the artists, postcards and posters of their works will be available — with 100% of profits going directly to the artists.

Synopsis:

Maryam, a 50-year-old woman from a wealthy Malaysian family, works as an art gallery director. Intelligent, beautiful, and serene, she chooses to follow her heart and wishes to marry a young African man from Sierra Leone. But her decision collides with the weight of societal expectations, exposing the hypocrisy within power structures.

A story about love, resilience, and the price of freedom.

After the screening, we will hold a 45–60 minute open discussion with our main guest and the audience. The conversation will be free-flowing and informal — a space to share reflections, ask questions, and connect through the themes of the film and art.
