A well-known bet: a linguistics professor takes in a girl from the gutter and aims to transform her into a refined lady. What could possibly go wrong?

Bernard Shaw's play, published in 1913, is today best known through its adaptations—the film and musical My Fair Lady—though these differ significantly from the original Pygmalion. With pointed wit, the play explores timeless issues of class, language, and, of course, money.

The title refers to Greek mythology: the sculptor Pygmalion who fell in love with his own creation and prayed to the gods to bring it to life.
