What is Art? - Manx Philosophical Café

What is art? 🤔

There are a lot of things considered art, from paintings and sculpture, to music and movies. Sometimes we say a beautiful natural vista is art. 🌹🌺

Perhaps art is purely in the eye of the beholder. 👀 But that seems a bit odd. Art is not art in virtue of being beautiful; there’s plenty of ugly art. Also, doesn’t it seem reasonable that the artist has some say about whether or not what they created is art? 🧐

Maybe art is defined neither by the artist nor the beholder; maybe there are outside criteria? It could be what place art holds in our tradition and society? 👩‍👩‍👦‍👦
