The discussion will consider how language is used in moments of conflict or heightened emotion, and how meaning and intent can shift in public discourse.The panel will also examine the social and legal frameworks surrounding speech and misinformation in Australia, including debates around free speech, incitement, vilification and the experiences of communities impacted by harmful language.Join us for a thoughtful and wide ranging discussion offering insight into how misinformation operates, and how we might better recognise and respond to it.About the speakersProfessor Nick Enfield is an award-winning author, speaker, and researcher working on the ecology of language power, and its role in mind, culture, and society. His books include What is Truth For? (2025), Language vs. Reality (2022), and How We Talk (2017), along with more than twenty other books with academic publishers including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and MIT Press. His wide-ranging work appears in outlets from scholarly journals including Psychological Review and Current Anthropology to media including The Wall Street Journal and The Time Literary Supplement. Nick is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. His research on language, culture, cognition and social life is based on long term field work in mainland Southeast Asia, especially Laos.Anthony Levin is an award-winning writer, broadcaster and human rights lawyer with two decades of experience in media and law. As a lawyer, he specialises in civil liberties and discrimination law, and has given evidence at multiple parliamentary inquiries, including on behalf of National Legal Aid. He has published on human rights issues in legal and academic journals, and in 2024 he was a Finalist for Government Lawyer of the Year. He is also a two-time recipient of the John Hennessy Legal Scholarship for his advocacy on indigenous healthcare in Pr*son.Outside of law, he is the co-host of the multi-award-winning SBS podcast Grave Matters which offers a lighter look at death and dying. His writing has appeared in The Guardian, Men’s Style, Prospect Magazine, and various anthologies, while in a former life, Anthony wrote comedy for stage, film, and TV.Polly Cameron is a facilitator, mediator, and deliberative democracy practitioner with a decade of experience bringing people together across public engagement, community, and conflict resolution contexts. Her career has been an ongoing experiment in how people come together - and what gets in the way. She has served as National Program Manager at The School of Life Australia, led public engagement at the newDemocracy Foundation, and spent nearly three years as Director at Change Politics. A certified NMAS mediator and accredited mediation coach through the Resolution Institute, she also holds a diploma in Counselling with foundational training in Gestalt therapy. She writes and speaks about polarization, citizens assemblies, democratic reform, how to hold complexity in dialogue and disagreement.
