Studio Artist Workshop: Emotive Abstractions with Beth White
March 28, 2026
10am - 12pm
Ages: 5-8 years
Price: $25 for members;$30 for not-yet member
In this workshop students will explore how to convey emotions by using color, shape, line, and texture in a mixed media collage. Students are given an array of materials and a random emotion to depict. We’ll discuss how certain things relate to an emotional response in our daily lives like the weather, road signs, animals, plants, as well as metaphors in some children’s media. They can use these examples for inspiration as well as their own artistic license to create their collage.
Recommended children’s media exploring the abstract and surreal:
Inside Out and Inside Out 2:
What colors and shapes are used to depict each emotion in Riley’s brain?
Shape Island:
The three shapes all have very unique personality traits and lifestyles. In what ways do you think these traits connect with their appearance?
The Dot & The Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics (a Chuck Jones cartoon, 1965): What makes Line seem boring compared to Squiggle and Dot?
The Wizard of Oz (1939 film version):
How is color and texture used to depict Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, and the Wicked Witch? Do these features hint at their strengths and weaknesses?
