Bees make honey, they live in a hive, and they look after their queen…right?
The answer is yes–if you’re talking about honeybees. But not if you’re talking about the other 270 species of bee found in our country!
This unique course, delivered by Erica Evans from Hive Helpers, will explore the importance of both managed and wild bees in Surrey, and how these fascinating pollinators live, reproduce, and interact with each other.
Seen from the perspective of an eco-aware beekeeper, Erica will explain the pollen and nectar needs and uses of different bee species. We’ll also look at honey production from flower to jar, followed by a honey tasting, and learn about the extraordinary communication tool that is the ‘waggle dance’.
We’ll familiarise ourselves with the characteristics of various bee species, along with tips on how to identify them in the field, then put these skills into practice by searching for bees in the ancient woodland of Nower Wood.
The day will conclude with a talk about how we can all make responsible changes to benefit these declining but essential insects, be it in a simple window box, a garden, or community green space.
