Sam Hersbach, opening on Saturday 31 May.

The title refers to a curious phenomenon in which deep-sea sharks bite into undersea
communication cables; cables that carry nearly all data between continents, hidden
quietly beneath the ocean’s surface. It is an image both absurd and serious, where
nature and human technology collide in confusion. This tension between humor and
gravity flows through Hersbach’s work, which brings together layers of fantasy and
reality, digital detritus and historical references, painting and installation. In his
compositions, figuration and abstraction intersect through a diverse visual language
shaped by memes, medieval symbolism, submarine entanglements, community
gatherings, and imaginary creatures.
What begins as a casual internet scroll (through articles, videos, or heraldic imagery)
may result in a scene where insects attempt to pilot submarines or microscopic figures
meet across enormous distances. In these paintings, scale is unstable: one section
might zoom in on the one-millimeter level, while elsewhere we drift kilometers away.
Nothing is fixed. In this universe, beings step in and out of the canvas, subvert
hierarchies, and enter into ongoing research into the unknown, into each other.
Hersbach’s work has evolved from narrative-driven scenes to painterly encounters
where material and process play a central role. He paints with a

combination of hard acrylics, soft gouache, and self-made pigments. Some derived
from dried flowers gifted after an exhibition, or from ethically
sourced dune grass tied to Dutch coastal ecology. By working on raw, untreated
canvas and building up in careful layers, Hersbach treats the surface not just as a
carrier of image, but as an emotional and physical terrain. Texture becomes essential:
from rough to lush, matte to reflective, he integrates wooden planks, metal sheets, and
photo transfers into the canvas, forming a layered dialogue of visual languages.
Color is used not simply as decoration but as a tool of contradiction and emphasis. A

disturbing figure might be rendered in joyful hues, while an element may vanish in near-
monochrome tones. The result is confusion, curiosity, and a sense of layered worlds

that resonate with how humans move through various realities: planetary, microbial,
digital, and social.
Influenced by a wide range of artists, such as Marlene Dumas, Kasper Bosmans, René
Daniëls, Per Kirkeby, Katja Seib, and countless anonymous medieval painters,
Hersbach brings together themes of mythology, community, absurdity, and visual
research in a way that feels both playful and deeply grounded.
As Hersbach describes, his paintings are not about fixed meaning. Every viewer enters
with their own background, associations, and perspective. It’s precisely that multiplicity
that his work invites. Elements of humour, scale shifts, historical fragments, and
imagined systems coexist on the canvas, asking not for resolution, but for reflection.
Shark-induced cable faults is open by appointment and will remain on view until 3rd
August 2025.
