Animal Law and the Animal Protection Field

Animal Law and the Animal Protection Field

Please join us in welcoming Maral Cavner! Maral Cavner, Esq. graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in May 2018 where she received multiple highly distinguished honors including: the Animal Law Leadership Award and Cornelius Honor Society membership. These were awarded to Maral for her leadership in the animal law community, earning the respect of peers and faculty for her commitment to advancing the field of animal law.

Maral was inspired to begin a career in animal protection and to adopt a vegan lifestyle after falling in love with a four-legged rescue dog, Sweetie, a formerly abused pit-bull type dog with the kindest heart and cutest “Yoda ears” you will ever see.

Since adopting Sweetie and during her three years at Lewis & Clark Law, Maral directed the largest and most active Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter in the country, served as the Submissions Editor of the Animal Law Review, clerked with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), volunteered actively with Humane Society International, and became a first place recipient of the Advancement of Animal Law Scholarship from the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

Maral has also been fortunate enough to help out with (all successful) campaigns to defeat breed bans, strengthen protections for farmed animals, and protect wildlife. Maral serves as Co-Chair of HSUS’ State Legislative Committee, as a District Leader for the organization, and as the member-at-large for the Animal Law Section of the Oregon State Bar.

As the United States Corporate Campaigns Coordinator for Animal Equality, Maral oversees the campaign to persuade McDonald’s to adopt a comprehensive animal welfare policy for the chickens in the corporation's meat supply chain.

Maral will be speaking about to be involved in the animal protection field (full time and part time), about her role with Animal Equality, and about the work the non-profit does for farmed animals.

Lunch will be provided. This meeting is sponsored by the national chapter of Animal Legal Defense Fund. This meeting is part of Justice for Animals Week.
