Johnny Dowd (vs)
De zwarte dichter van de americana, op het kruispunt van country en punk.
Johnny Dowd is een Amerikaanse singer-songwriter die sinds de jaren negentig een eigenzinnige positie inneemt binnen de alt-country en americana. Zijn muziek laveert tussen country, blues, punk en spoken word, altijd gekleurd door een duistere flair en een vaak cynische (of realistische) blik op het leven.
Pas op latere leeftijd begon Dowd aan zijn muzikale pad — rond zijn veertigste, in Ithaca, New York, waar hij zijn eerste nummers schreef. Zijn debuutalbum Wrong Side of Memphis uit 1995 bezorgde hem meteen een cultstatus. Recensenten omschrijven hem als “Willie Nelson die verandert in Mr. Hyde” en prijzen zijn gruizige stem, gitzwarte humor en nietsontziende teksten.
In de jaren die volgden bracht Dowd bijna twintig albums uit, tourde hij door de VS en Europa, en werkte hij samen met onder meer The Mekons, Sally Timms en Jon Langford. Zijn meest recente plaat, Is Heaven Real? (How Would I Know?), grijpt terug op de soul en R&B uit zijn jeugd in Oklahoma en Memphis, maar dan met zijn kenmerkend eigenwijze stijl.
Johnny keert in 2026 terug naar 4AD, en gaf ons nog deze boodschap mee over de nieuwe plaat waar hij mee de oversteek zal maken:
“Friends, Romans, countrymen this is the best of times and the worst of times. why it is the worst of times is obvious why it is the best of times is a mystery. I’m heading back over to Europe with my crack band – Michael Stark on keyboards, Park Doing on vocals and Melodica and yours truly on guitar and harmonica. when I get over there, I will have a box full of what might be described as art and a box full of my brand new record which at this point is about 2/3 done. We have around 25 songs so we’ll have to get rid of The Bad Ones. I can’t really say this record has any unifying theme. it’s not making any point except to record some good tunes. I would describe it as a buffet of every style that I have ever attempted. There are a couple of heavy tunes a la Gargon, some country weepers, a pretty disturbing Christmas song and a couple of off-the-wall pieces. You’re going to love it. this may or may not be my final tour of Europe, but just to be on the safe side you best show up. Kkeep your heads up people and don’t let the bastards get you down.” – Johnny Dowd
