To explore the technology, safety measures, and environmental impact behind Bangladesh’s first nuclear power facility, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter is proud to organize a seminar titled “Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant: Technology, Safety, and Environmental Impact.” The seminar will be held on July 05, 2026, at Syndicate Hall, North South University.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the largest single infrastructure project in Bangladesh’s history. Located in Pabna, the plant consists of two nuclear reactors, each capable of generating 1,200 MW of electricity, resulting in a total installed capacity of 2,400 MW. Once fully operational, it is expected to supply approximately 10–12% of the country’s electricity demand.

Beyond increasing power generation capacity, the project represents a major step toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. Bangladesh has long depended heavily on fossil fuels for electricity generation. The introduction of nuclear energy will help diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce dependence on imported fuels, strengthen energy security, and significantly lower carbon emissions.

This seminar offers a unique opportunity for EEE students, aspiring engineers, researchers, and anyone interested in clean energy technologies. Nuclear power plants are among the most sophisticated engineering systems in the world, involving reactor technology, electrical systems, safety engineering, grid integration, and environmental management. Understanding how these systems operate provides valuable insights into one of the most important developments in Bangladesh’s energy sector.

The session will be conducted by Md. Nazmul Bari, Assistant Manager (Engineering), Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL). As a professional directly involved in the engineering operations of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, he possesses firsthand experience and practical knowledge of Bangladesh’s first nuclear facility. His insights will provide participants with a real-world perspective on the technologies, challenges, and opportunities associated with nuclear power generation.
