◈ SYNOPSIS ◈

When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. In her free time, as Henrietta attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love.

◈ CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS ◈

HENRIETTA LEAVITT: 499 lines. Female-presenting, young to middle-aged adult. Brilliant and meticulous aspiring scientist working for the astronomy department at Harvard. Unrefined, passionate, and stubbornly determined to discover meaning within her findings.

MARGARET LEAVITT (she/her) – 212 lines. Female-presenting, young to middle-aged adult. Homemaker and Henrietta’s sister. Caring, traditional and family-oriented, and a musical composer and piano player.

PETER SHAW (he/him) – 257 lines. Male-presenting, young to middle-aged adult. Apprentice to the head astronomer at Harvard who supervises the women at the observatory, and Henrietta’s love interest. Logical, lacks self-confidence, and awkward but excitable.

ANNIE CANNON (she/her) – 153 lines. Female-presenting, middle-aged adult. Leader of the computing department and creator of the Harvard Classification Scheme, which organizes stars by their spectral types and temperatures. Blunt and direct, warms over the course of the show, and becomes a suffragette.

WILLIAMINA FLEMING (she/her) – 146 lines. Female-presenting, middle-aged to late adulthood. Scottish immigrant and the first Curator of Astronomical Photographs at Harvard. Witty and fun, proud, and protective of those she cares about.

PLEASE NOTE:
• Williamina is Scottish, but we will only do an accent if the actor playing her is comfortable with it.
• The script calls for Margaret to sing and play piano. We can put in a sound cue for piano, but are hoping for actual singing, if possible.
• Henrietta and Peter share a level of intimacy (including where they are supposed to kiss)
that we can decide the extent of based on the comfort of the actors.
• Henrietta wears a period appropriate hearing aid throughout the show.
