Exhibition Dates:
24 May - 12 July 2025
Upper Gallery, Level 2
This work is a reflection on movement—of people, vessels, and time—centred on the rhythmic flow of traffic in and out of the city, and the presence of the Mersey River as both threshold and thoroughfare.
This exhibition borrows from, and is informed by, research into the Mersey River, the history of the Victoria Bridge, and the evolving identity of Devonport itself. Undertaken as part of the development process for the Entrance Markers commissioned by Devonport City Council, this body of work explores the narratives, materials, and symbolism that emerged through that research and fed into the final public installation.
Referencing the channel markers that guide ships safely through the river’s currents, the work draws on their quiet symbolism—of direction, transition, and the unseen systems that shape our journeys. Glass is used as a metaphor for the river itself: fluid, layered, and reflective, it captures the interplay of light and motion, while echoing the beacons that punctuate the water.
Juxtaposed with these elements are vertical timber forms, standing as remnants and reminders of the old Victoria Bridge, which once spanned the Mersey before its collapse in 1924. These forms evoke both memory and material trace—silent witnesses to a structure long gone, yet still present in the collective memory of place.
Together, these components form a meditation on passage, memory, and the built environment—inviting a dialogue between what endures, what is lost, and how we navigate the spaces in between.
