Robinson’s life and photography, uncovering the stories behind his images and their historical context.Nic Haygarth is a Tasmanian historian who gained a PhD in history at the University of Tasmania. A prolific author, his most recent books are Mountain men: stories from the Tasmanian high country (with Simon Cubit, 2015), Wonderstruck: treasuring Tasmania’s caves and karst (2015) On the ossie: Tasmanian osmiridium and the fountain pen industry (2017), Bush lives: tales from the Tasmanian backblocks (2024) and Bush lives 2 (2025). He is passionate about wild places, high country and those who populate them.Exhibition Dates:22 November 2025 – 21 February 2026For 40 years John Henry (‘Jackie’) Robinson (1883–1953) framed Waratah and the West Coast from a tripod. Robinson and two of his brothers were highly skilled photographers. From 1913 Jackie was an outstanding amateur based in Waratah. However, he appears to have given many of his plates to his brother Robert Vaudry (‘Bert’), hence their lodgement in the Robinson Photographic Collection at the Devonport Regional Gallery.Jackie produced so many portraits in Waratah that semi-professional might be a better tag for him than amateur. He developed his plates at night when his job was done for the day. No golden wedding anniversary, vice-regal visit or patriotic demonstration escaped his shutter. This exhibition is curated by Author and Historian, Nic Haygarth.Image: JH Robinson, Holdfast Tunnel excavation workers including WJ Thorne, 1933, R00741.8

"description": "The Devonport Regional Gallery is housed within the paranaple arts centre in Market Square, off Rooke Street in Devonport. There are three galleries on-site, plus additional exhibition spaces, offering free entry 6 days a week. The Devonport Regional Gallery is open 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday, and 9.00am – 2.00pm on Saturdays and Public Holidays (Closed Sundays). The Devonport Regional Gallery evolved from the inception of The Little Gallery, which was founded by Jean Thomas as a private enterprise in 1966.Jean Thomas’ vision for the Gallery was as a centre for community arts and activities. Her aim was to promote Tasmanian artists and to provide an impartial program of appreciation with the inclusion of national and international exhibitions. She developed a complimentary project in the display and sale of fine wool, and woven and knitted products made by local craftswomen which not only helped support the gallery financially, but also promoted the recognition of one of Tasmania’s primary industries. The Little Gallery was situated in a weatherboard building behind the Baptist Church in Stewart Street, which was home to the Devonport Regional Gallery until 2018.The Baptist Church was built in 1904 and was designed and constructed by Stephen Priest Senior and Stephen Priest Junior. In 1969 when the church moved to other premises, the building incorporated the Devonport Library until 1983, when it became the designated site for the Devonport Gallery and Arts Centre. In 2004 the Gallery underwent refurbishment including new gallery walls and floor and in 2012 a purpose built facility was completed to provide the safe housing and display of the Gallery’s Permanent Collection. In October 2018 the Gallery moved into new premises and is now part of the paranaple arts centre in Rooke Street. The new gallery spaces are housed within the old Courthouse building, next to the Town Hall. The Gallery presents an annual program of exhibitions, education and public programs including events and workshops. In keeping with Jean Thomas’ vision, the Gallery collects and promotes Tasmanian art, craft and design and runs an Emerging artist program to support local and state-wide artists. The program showcases emerging artist’s work in The Little Gallery. Other gallery space include a Main and Upper Gallery, as well as a new Creative Space. The Gallery is supported by the Devonport City Council, Arts Tasmania, Special Committee, Friends of the Gallery and the Gallery’s young member’s committee The DROOGS. Other funding is received through the Australian Governments Deductible Gift Recipient Status."
