To celebrate the art of hand repair, we are SO excited to host a sashiko visible mending workshop!About Sashiko: Sashiko is a versatile Japanese stitching technique used to mend, reinforce, and embellish garments and textiles. Pieces with sashiko elements have been found dating back to the 700s. The traditional method uses white thread on a dark background in a running stitch to create geometric patterns and designs that make pieces both beautiful and functional.About the Workshop: This immersive workshop offers a hands-on introduction to learning this ancient and beautiful art in a fun and relaxed environment. You will learn to create geometric patterns on fabric using a simple running stitch and explore functional and decorative applications for this skill, such as mending, reinforcing, and embellishing garments and home goods.All participants will be provided a handmade sewing pouch with all the necessary supplies to create their sashiko piece. Written instructions are also included so you can replicate what you learn at home.*If you joined us for our first workshop, this workshop will feature a different pattern!*About the Instructor: Tamara Duquette is a Detroit resident and an experienced sewist and hand-stitching enthusiast. She began exploring the art of sashiko during COVID by taking online workshops from a woman in Japan who is an expert in the craft. Tamara met women from around the world through these workshops, and over four years of experience has given her the history and skills to teach sashiko to others.
