Michigan is ours to protect.We’re all troubled by a federal agenda aimed to deregulate, defund and threaten the things we hold close: our air, waters, people and places we love. Repairing that federal architecture may take a generation—so we Michiganders have to step up.  And the Michigan Environmental Council has the expertise and immense network to do just that. The Ours to Protect event series invites you into a conversation about what those solutions look like, and how you can help protect our state. This event will focus on our efforts to combat a federal deregulation agenda that’s defunding critical social welfare and air quality programs, while simultaneously making it easier for corporate polluters to double down on development in overburdened communities. Detroit already boasts some of the worst air quality in the nation, along with a poverty rate hovering around 35%. Residents simply can’t afford more harm and less accountability from industry. That’s why we’re working to implement a strong cumulative impacts assessment framework in Michigan that would protect Black and Brown communities from new polluters; working to make environmental justice a key focus for Detroit’s top city officials; and leading a coalition of Detroit environmental organizations who work at the grassroots level to tackle issues from flooding, to urban greenspace, community solar and more.
