Oluyemi Thomas founded the music + poetry ensemble Positive Knowledge with his wife, poet Ijeoma Chinue Thomas as a means of invoking deeper spiritual awareness, in the practice and celebration of their Bahá’í faith. Their work with Positive Knowledge led them to collaborative work with artists such as Marshall Allen, Henry Grimes, Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Wadada Leo Smith and Cecil Taylor, to name but a few.
For his show at Moondog, Oluyemi will be joined by his brother Kenn Thomas, a Michigan-based composer, educator & pianist who knows Moondog’s piano well. They’ll be joined by Jaribu Shahid on upright bass who — if you didn’t already know — is a total Detroit musical legend. From his work with Griot Galaxy to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Shahid has been a principle keeper of the flame in Detroit’s creative music scene. That makes for some deep company and infinite possibilities on our stage for this winter solstice evocation.
Doors open at 6pm with music beginning at 7. Tickets are available in advance for $17 and will be $20 at the door. Make a point to hear this! Peace + Light ~
