Detroit saxophone icon Dave McMurray celebrates the Blue Note Records release of I LOVE LIFE even when I’m hurting with a free hometown performance at Third Man Cass Corridor. McMurray’s fearless tenor sax takes the spotlight, joined on stage and on the album by Ibrahim Jones (bass), Maurice O’Neal (keys), Wayne Gerard (guitar), Jeff Canady (drums), and Mahindi Masai (percussion). Expect melodies that land in the heart, a big-pocket groove, and Detroit fire carried by McMurray and company.
I LOVE LIFE even when I’m hurting turns loss into movement and reflection into sound, carrying Detroit’s pulse through every note. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Don Was, this Blue Note Records album also features Luis Resto (keys), Don Was (bass), and Herschel Boone (vocals). Featuring KEM on a stirring rendition of Al Jarreau’s “We Got By,” Blending jazz, funk, and soul into an uplifting reflection on resilience, love, and groove, McMurray continues to honor the city that made him. Following his acclaimed Blue Note Records releases Music Is Life (2018), Grateful Deadication (2021), and Grateful Deadication 2 (2023), he remains one of Detroit’s most adventurous and expressive artists, carrying its sound forward.
A special limited edition vinyl pressing of the album will be available for purchase at this event.
