Eventually taking a more academic route, he received a BA in physics and Ph. D. in mechanical engineering, taking a combustion research job at General Motors and moving to Detroit in the early 2010's. After a stint in corporate research, he left to co-found Sfumato and Castalia, a perfumery and cocktail bar located in Detroit's Midtown neighborhood, where he is the Nose and resident Cocktail Scientist.
