- **Event Name**: Rock'n'Roll: The Geology & Faultlines of Joshua Tree National Park (UCRX .5 Units)
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 18 Apr, 2026 at 12:00 pm – Sat, 18 Apr, 2026 at 04:00 pm (-07:00)
- **Event Description**: Joshua Tree National Park is home to two primary rock types — granites and gneisses — with other rocks such as diorites also present throughout the park. In this class, participants will explore how minerals form and combine to create rocks, learn about the three major rock types (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), and gain the skills to visually identify minerals within granites and gneisses. The course highlights the park’s diverse granitic formations and explains the geological origins of both granites and gneisses, then moves into the field where minerals, rocks, and the broader geologic landscape come to life. Students will use a guided checklist to observe, describe, photograph, and make connections in order to better understand the rocks of the park. This immersive experience introduces the fundamentals of geology, including tectonic plate boundaries and igneous rock formation, and invites participants to not only identify rocks but fully engage with the extraordinary and awe-inspiring landscape of Joshua Tree National Park. This field class takes place throughout Joshua Tree National Park. Virtual: The lecture portion of this class is held via Zoom. Experience requirements General: Anyone may attend! No experience or expertise is required. Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is not included in the cost of enrollment. Visit recreation.gov or a visitor center to purchase your pass ahead of time. Alessandro Grippo, Ph.D., Geological Sciences, University of Southern California, has done research and taught geology, oceanography, stratigraphy, environmental geology and field classes at Santa Monica College and several California State University campuses. Alessandro has a keen interest for the geology of the American southwest and loves being out there exploring, learning, and sharing his passion for Earth and its history. Alessandro also worked in the oil industry between his M.S. and his Ph.D., was a fellow faculty member at NASA-JPL for one year, and brought his students from Catalina Island to Nevada, from the Salton Sea to northern California. His interests and study, together with his passion for photography took him throughout Europe and the Americas looking for geological features.
