This class covers resource use and the legacy of mining, ranching, and other activities that can still be observed. The lecture portion of this class takes place at Joshua Tree National Park Headquarters in Twentynine Palms. The outdoor portion takes place at historical homesteading sites in Joshua Tree National Park. Anyone may attend! No expertise or experience is required. Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is not included in the cost of enrollment. Visit recreation.gov or a visitor center to purchase your pass ahead of time. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Carpooling with other participants is recommended. This class is leisurely. It requires less than 2 miles of walking with shade, seating, consistent terrain, and little to no elevation gain. Meet Your Instructor! Thomas Crochetiere is a docent with the National Park Service at Joshua Tree National Park, where he has volunteered since 2013 following a career in public service. With over 5,000 hours of service, he was honored with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 and was previously featured during National Volunteer Week in 2019. In addition to his work at the park, Thomas volunteers as a Welcome Ambassador at the California Welcome Center in Yucca Valley and is active with the Morongo Basin Historical Museum and the Twentynine Palms Historical Society. He also teaches for the Desert Institute and frequently gives lectures on local history. A dedicated historian, Thomas has published five books on Joshua Tree National Park and continues to research and share the stories that shaped the region. An avid traveler, he has visited all 50 states — twice — and recently completed a 72-day RV journey through Alaska with his wife.
