- **Event Name**: Ancient Icons: Geology of Joshua Tree National Park
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 28 Mar, 2026 at 08:00 am – Sat, 28 Mar, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Come meet the unique rocks of Joshua Tree National Park! In this two-day workshop, develop an understanding of the relative ages of the rocks, the processes responsible for their formation, and the roles they play in the current ecosystem, while also exploring some of the most iconic types of rocks and species of plants in this part of the park. We will also cover the characteristics of the various rocks as they relate to rock climbing. This two-day field class takes place in the northwestern part of Joshua Tree National Park and highlights many of the park’s most iconic rock formations. This class is suitable for intermediate to experienced hikers. No experience or expertise is required, though familiarity with geology fundamentals is helpful. Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is not included in the cost of enrollment. Visit recreation.gov or a visitor center to purchase your pass ahead of time. No meals or equipment are provided. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Carpooling with other participants is recommended. This class is moderate to strenuous. Day one requires less than 5 miles of walking with limited elevation gain on somewhat variable terrain and/or more than one hour outdoors in the elements. Day two requires 5 or more miles of walking, which may include several hours outdoors in the elements, significant elevation gain, and variable terrain. You will need personal equipment. Meet Your Instructor! Rick McNeill is a botanist/ecologist who has worked and played in the Mojave Desert and eastern Sierra Mountains since 2006. He was seduced to the dark side (geology) when he was the restoration ecologist at Joshua Tree NP in 2017-2019 and is currently very confused by the rocks at Death Valley NP. Equipment list: A minimum of 2 to 3 liters of water per day, food and snacks, including packed lunches, closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots — no sandals are permitted, including hiking sandals, sun protection, including hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — light-colored long-sleeved shirts are recommended, daypack to carry equipment and personal items, topo map (optional), full tank of gas prior to arriving at the meeting location.
