Martin Dowling: The Great Hunger and Irish Musical Life

This talk will describe the state of Irish popular music making on the eve of the Great Famine and explore how the great changes in society and culture in the following decades affected the course of musical development, both in Ireland and in the Irish diaspora. Examples from collections of the period will be performed and discussed, and the sound recordings of famine survivors will be heard as well.

Martin Dowling is a historian, sociologist, and fiddle player. He has held lectureships and research fellowships history, sociology, and musicology in Queen’s University of Belfast and University College Dublin.
