Earth Peoples’ Park in Norton, Vermont was part of a counterculture revolution that swept across the country in the late 1960s and early 70s, and Vermont was in the forefront of this movement. The state attracted many counterculture revolutionaries who had a different vision of society than that of the mainstream of society. They rejected the decade-long war in Vietnam, suburban life and middle-class expectations and values. The back-to-the -land movement, fueled by the rejection of materialism and consumerism and such publications as Mother Earth News, The Whole Earth Catalogue and Fox Fire magazine brought thousands of young people, some called Hippies, to Vermont hoping to create or find utopian communities based on the principles of self-reliance and a communal work ethic. Three noteworthy communes were born in the area: Frog Run Farm in East Charleston, Mad Brook Community in Westmore, Entropy Acres in Glover, along with Earth Peoples’ Park. A former community member of Earth Peoples’ Park wrote, “Earth Peoples Park was born at a time of social upheaval. We were a separate nation within a nation.” Earth Peoples’ Park was founded by Hugh Romney, better know as Wavy Gravy, on the philosophy of Free Land for Free People. Much folklore, mystery, high ideals and tragedy are embedded in twenty year life of Earth Peoples’ Park
Gordon will provide an overview of the communal movement in Vermont and delve into the history of Earth People’s Park, its early beginning and its demise. Anyone who visited or lived at Earth Peoples’ Park is welcome to attend and share their experiences and views.
Gordon, being a “child of the sixties” has studied the back to the land movement and wrote a four-part series of Earth Peoples’ Park in the Northland Journal He has hiked through the former commune, now known as Black Turn Brook State Forest, several times, reliving the time when EPP was alive with an alternative life style typical of the days when communes were prevalent in Vermont.
