- **Event Description**: For generations, our understanding of female hormones has focused predominantly on reproduction, fertility and pregnancy.


Yet hormones do far more than influence the reproductive system they shape brain function throughout a woman’s life. Fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone affect neurotransmitters involved in mood, attention, emotional regulation, sleep and cognition, but these effects have historically received far less attention in medical education, research and clinical practice.


This webinar explores the emerging science of the hormone–brain connection through the lens of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and neurodivergence.


We will examine how changing hormone levels interact with key neurotransmitters, why some women appear particularly sensitive to these fluctuations, and the growing evidence that ADHD and autistic women may experience disproportionate effects across the menstrual cycle.


Combining neuroscience, current evidence, clinical practice and lived experience, this presentation will explore how to recognise PMDD, distinguish it from PMS and premenstrual exacerbation of existing conditions, and discuss practical, evidence-informed approaches to management.


It will also highlight the significant gaps that remain in our understanding of female brain health and why a broader appreciation of hormones beyond reproduction is essential to improving care.


This is a rapidly evolving field that challenges traditional thinking and invites clinicians to reconsider how we understand, recognise and support women experiencing hormone-related changes in brain function.
