About the event

"Invisible Threads" Artist Talk and Panel Discussion
Join photographer Julia Cumes and her collaborator, Lipe Borges, along with several portrait subjects from the exhibition, Invisible Threads: Portraits and Stories of our Global Neighbors, for an evening of storytelling and dialogue. Julia and Lipe will share behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the project, while portrait subjects speak about their personal journeys reflected in the exhibition. The program concludes with an audience Q&A, offering a deeper look into the lives and stories that bring the portraits to life. Portions of the evening will include Portuguese translation to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all.

Julia Cumes is a South African-born photographer who has made Cape Cod her home for over two decades. Her work is rooted in storytelling, with a focus on capturing authentic moments of human connection and exploring social and environmental issues through the lens of portraiture.

Growing up under Apartheid shaped her understanding of injustice and the power of visual storytelling to foster empathy and spark change. Much of her work centers on women’s experiences, struggles for equity, and wildlife conservation—both locally and globally.

Her latest project, Invisible Threads: Portraits and Stories of Our Global Neighbors, explores the lives of immigrants who have made Cape Cod their home. Through life-sized portraits and deeply personal narratives, the series reveals the complex journeys of individuals and families seeking safety, opportunity, and belonging. Invisible Threads will be on view at the Cape Cod Museum of Art from August through November 2025.

Julia’s work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times and The Boston Globe, and she was named the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s Artist of the Year in 2024. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally. To learn more, visit juliacumes.com or follow her on Instagram @juliacumes.

Lipe Borges is an independent photographer who specializes in portrait and documentary photography, focusing on capturing the unique essence of each individual and their stories. He believes in forming genuine connections and keenly observing how people express their distinct qualities. Borges is passionate about traveling the world, continually learning and evolving, while documenting the fascinating journey of life.
