Julia Cumes is a South African-born photographer who has made Cape Cod her home for over two decades. Her work is rooted in storytelling, with a focus on capturing authentic moments of human connection and exploring social and environmental issues through the lens of portraiture.
Growing up under Apartheid shaped her understanding of injustice and the power of visual storytelling to foster empathy and spark change. Much of her work centers on women’s experiences, struggles for equity, and wildlife conservation—both locally and globally.
Her latest project, Invisible Threads: Portraits and Stories of Our Global Neighbors, explores the lives of immigrants who have made Cape Cod their home. Through life-sized portraits and deeply personal narratives, the series reveals the complex journeys of individuals and families seeking safety, opportunity, and belonging. Invisible Threads will be on view at the Cape Cod Museum of Art from August through November 2025.
Julia’s work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times and The Boston Globe, and she was named the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s Artist of the Year in 2024. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally. To learn more, visit juliacumes.com or follow her on Instagram @juliacumes.
