Workshop Descriptions

Ain’t That News: Balladry as Journalism
Friday, 7:00–8:30 pm | Ben Traverse
Folk music has long been a vehicle for preserving historical and current events. Using traditional and popular reference points, we’ll explore how folk music functions as journalism and how that tradition can be carried into the 21st century.

Finding the Fun in Writing
Friday, 8:30–9:00 pm | Koro Kouyati
Participants will be put into teams to play a songwriting game rooted in storytelling. We’ll explore unexpected inspiration — whether it’s an orange dancing in the sun or a hair day gone wrong. This workshop is spontaneous, playful, and freeing.

Power Through Authenticity and the Sing-Along
Saturday, 10:30 am–12:00 pm | Dede Alder
Through a series of prompts, we’ll identify one or more of your life’s passions and missions, then transform them into sing-along anthems designed to empower both yourself and others to live fully into their purpose.

The Power of the Pause: Taking Control Over Stage Fright
Saturday, 12:00–12:30 pm | Audra Kubat
This workshop focuses on delivery and the power of the pause. Through short exercises, we’ll practice turning anxiety into confidence, helping you feel more present and grounded during live performances.

Writing Things You Never Said But Always Felt
Saturday, 2:00–3:30 pm | Koro Kouyati
This workshop focuses on stored grief and pain held in the body, especially the heart. As children, we freely express emotions; as adults, we’re often taught to suppress them. Vulnerability is not weakness — it’s strength. You’ll choose the depth of what you explore, whether it’s body image, loss, grief, or unspoken desires. Through original lyrics and melody, this workshop becomes both an ode to what was lost and a love letter to yourself.

Transformational Breathwork
Saturday, 4:00–5:30 pm | Dede Alder
Use the power of your breath to enter a deeper state of awareness and release limiting fears stored in the body. Breathwork supports nervous system regulation, healing on all levels (mind, body, spirit), and access to deep inner knowing.

Floating Verses and Folk Lyric
Saturday, 7:30–8:00 pm | Ben Traverse
Floating verses are a vibes-based folk tradition where verses aren’t tied to a single song. We’ll explore what makes them work and use the form as a creative vehicle to generate new material.Songs of Resistance:

What More Can We Find
Sunday, 10:30 am–12:00 pm | Audra Kubat
This workshop examines a song you’ve already written. Through guided inquiry, we’ll explore what the lyrics are truly saying, what more can be uncovered, and how they might be refined. We’ll practice separating emotional attachment from the editing process, strengthening your critical lens while honoring the heart of the song.
