- **Event Name**: The OSES Conference - Industry Panel - Offshore Energy Storage - in person
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 09 Jul, 2026 at 03:30 pm – Thu, 09 Jul, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: This workshop event is an integral part of the 2026 OffShore Energy and Storage conference, OSES2026.About this EventEnergy sourced from offshore renewables (mainly offshore wind) is going to become the mainstay of energy supplies for countries in Northern Europe and elsewhere in the world. The resources providing that energy are variable – with typical timescales running between several hours and a few hundreds of hours. Some ways must be found to manage that variability and energy storage located alongside the energy farms (and possibly integrated with those energy farms) is an ideal choice in many respects. Providing the storage here exploits some of the natural resources that can help to support the storage and also makes the best use of the transmission lines. Society is just beginning to wake up to the importance of offshore energy storage and there are many challenges as well as many opportunities. This panel session will discuss the general area of offshore energy storage looking at technologies available and impediments to progress – as well a possible solutions to those impediments. The panel will have been a success if it sheds even a little further light on how best to go forward with storing energy offshore.Full programme for OSES2026 is available at: The session will be chaired by: Professor Seamus Garvey (University of Nottingham)Co-chair: Babasola Ogunnaike (Subsea7).Confirmed Panelists:David Molenaar (Phynix; former Managing Director, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy) – Technology Developer PerspectiveJavier Fatou Gomez (TNO) – Research & Knowledge Institute PerspectiveEva Ferrier (Invest-NL) – Investor PerspectiveElvin Eren (Xodus) – Industry Consultant PerspectiveVincent Bonnin (DMEC, NL)Prof. Marco Antoneo Pantaleo (Prof. of Thermodynamics at University of Bari and former EIC programme managerTopics for DiscussionThe role of offshore energy storage in future energy systemsInvestment opportunities and commercial business modelsGrid congestion and system flexibility challengesIntegration of offshore wind, storage, and hydrogen productionTechnology readiness and deployment pathwaysPolicy, regulation, and market development needsLessons learned from current projects and industry initiativesThe session will begin with 2 short industry presentations highlighting key findings from recent research on offshore energy storage, followed by an interactive panel discussion and audience Q&A.Industrial presenters:Elvin Eren (Xodus, UK): “Offshore Co-location: Batteries & Beyond for Net Zero”This short presentation summarises a recent report by XODUS which explores how integrating energy storage with offshore wind can help Europe unlock vast amounts of clean energy currently lost to grid constraints and curtailment. Drawing on technical, commercial and policy analysis, the session examines the growing mismatch between offshore wind deployment and transmission capacity, identifies priority regions where storage can deliver the greatest value, and evaluates offshore co-location pathways ranging from lithium-ion batteries to compressed-air and other long-duration storage technologies. Our study demonstrates how co-located storage can reduce curtailment, increase system flexibility, improve energy security, and create a new generation of dispatchable renewable power assets. It also outlines the policy reforms, commercial frameworks and technology roadmap needed to accelerate deployment, positioning offshore wind-plus-storage hubs as a key enabler of Europe’s net-zero energy future.Vincent Bonnin (DMEC, NL): "From Offshore Wind to Constrained Grids: Energy Storage Innovation in the Netherlands"The Netherlands offers a distinctive setting for energy storage development: a designated offshore economic zone, a fast-maturing storage ecosystem, and a transmission grid increasingly constrained by demand. This session explores how innovators, developers and the TSO are innovating to respond.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Registration options (this is a hybrid event)1.
