Since 2005, citrus greening (HLB) has devastated Florida citrus production, reducing yields by more than 90% and threatening the future of one of the state’s most iconic industries. Join Dr. Brendan Mormile to learn about his work using cutting-edge CRISPR technology to develop next-generation disease-resistant citrus.

*For Science Cafes, the Gillespie Museum stays open late until 6PM! Stop in and visit even if you aren't attending the program.

Brendan is a scientist at Soilcea, specializing in CRISPR editing to develop disease-resistant citrus. His work focuses on applying precision breeding to combat major citrus diseases like citrus greening (HLB) and canker by engineering targeted edits that enhance tree resilience. With expertise in plant pathology, plant molecular genetics, and crop resilience, he leads research and development efforts to improve citrus health. He received his PhD in Plant Pathology from Texas A&M, and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Michigan, focusing on Xanthomonas pathogenicity and using CRISPR editing.
