- **Event Description**: The J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center will host its next Soup-er Sunday program at noon on Sunday, March 8, featuring a compelling presentation by John Paris, Associate Professor of History at the College of DuPage. Titled “Absorbing Ambition”: Clinton Rosette, the DeKalb Press, and the Campaign to Bring NIU to DeKalb, the lecture explores the life and legacy of one of DeKalb’s most influential – yet often overlooked – civic leaders.

Though many residents recognize the name Clinton Rosette from the local middle school, few know the story behind the man. Born and raised in East Paw Paw, Rosette followed his father into education, teaching at East Paw Paw Academy before marrying fellow educator Alfaretta LaClaire. After relocating to DeKalb to establish a new academy, Rosette expanded into journalism, becoming the founding editor of the Daily Chronicle in 1879.

Working closely with his mentor, barbed wire entrepreneur and newspaper publisher Joseph F. Glidden, Rosette led the newspaper for three decades. His most enduring civic achievement came in 1895, when his advocacy proved instrumental in securing a state teachers college for DeKalb—an institution that would later grow into Northern Illinois University.

Paris’s presentation coincides with the exact 147th anniversary of Rosette’s founding of the Daily Chronicle, offering historical insight into Rosette’s ambition, influence, and lasting impact on the DeKalb community.

Soup-er Sunday programs support the J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center, a DeKalb not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the historic Glidden home and barn, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Admission is $5 per person and free for Glidden Homestead members. Admission includes the lecture, a bowl of soup, and guided tours of the historic homestead. The program will be held in the museum's Welcome Center at 921 W. Lincoln Highway.
