About this Event

Description: Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Branch's Youth Services Librarian Ms. Brooke and Mason Mill Park's Ranger Jonah are hosting a campfire event for the whole family. Bring chairs or a blanket, maybe a picnic dinner, and join us for fun stories and delicious s'mores.

What to expect: Though you can arrive at anytime, here is the general timeframe for the event:

  • It is a 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot to the campfire area, so take that into account when planning your evening.
  • 5 :00 - Ranger Jonah starts the fire
  • 5 :10 - Stories & Storytelling
  • 5 :30 - S'mores
  • 6 :00 - Stories & Storytelling
  • 6 :30 - End of program

Program leader: Program leaders will be Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park and Brooke Gable, the Youth Services Librarian at the Toco Hills-Avis G. Williams Library.

Where to meet: Park in the lower parking lot of the Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Library (1282 McConnell Dr, Decatur, GA 30033). It's a 0.1 mile walk on dirt trails to the campfire location. Start at the lower parking lot below the library and follow signs along the Woodland Cove Trail to the campfire area.

What to bring: Seating is limited, so we recommend bringing camp chairs or a picnic blanket. Consider also bringing a picnic dinner. Wear appropriate footwear, dress for the weather, and bring a refillable water bottle, a flashlight or headlamp, and hiking sticks if you need them.

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for families and children, but all ages are welcome.

Dogs: This program is NOT appropriate for dogs, so please leave your pup at home.

Weather contingency: This program will be postponed if it is raining.

Walking distance: 0.2 miles

Exposure: This walk is fully under shaded tree canopy.

Trail surface & accessibility: The route to get to the campfire follows single-track dirt trails and is not accessible for chair users or strollers. The dirt trails are less than 3 feet wide and have roots and rocks. Consider bringing hiking poles if your balance requires them. Questions if this program will work for your mobility?
