ABOUT THE ARTIST
With a career that spans more than four decades, five Grammy Awards, and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Marty Stuart is a true icon of American music.
A Mississippi native who got his start in Lester Flatt’s band at age 13 and later toured with Johnny Cash, Stuart has not only carved out a storied solo career with more than twenty albums, but also become a passionate steward of country music’s heritage. From founding The Congress of Country Music to amassing a collection of more than 20,000 historic artifacts, his legacy extends far beyond the stage.
“You have to make the music that’s in your heart,” says Stuart. That ethos is at the core of Altitude, his exhilarating new album—a sweeping, cinematic collection recorded in Nashville with his longtime band, The Fabulous Superlatives. Picking up where 2017’s Way Out West left off, the record ventures through a cosmic country landscape filled with misfits, drifters, honky-tonk heroes, and desert dreams. Rolling Stone hails Stuart as “one of the world’s foremost country experts and archivists,” and Altitude proves he’s still pushing boundaries while staying deeply rooted in tradition.
“If country music had a president, it would be Marty Stuart,” says Ken Burns. “This album is a reminder to me, and to anyone else out there who’s interested, that there’s still a few of us left who know how to do it. This music is in our hearts.”
